What is Fucoidan?

Fucoidan is one of the gelatinous constituents that form the substance of marine flora such as Mozuku, Konbu and Wakame, etc. In recent years, with greater light being shed on our understanding of the benefits, Fucoidan has become a focus of attention as a functional food resource. The raw material, Okinawa Mozuku, is a marine brown algae of the Nagamatsumo (Chordariaceae) family, which is endemic to the Ryukyu Archipelago. The development of aquaculture technologies for Okinawa Mozuku, which has formed part of the traditional Okinawan diet since ancient times, began in the 1970s, and today, about 20,000 tons are produced every year, with Okinawa prefecture accounting for over 90% of production in Japan. Furthermore, Okinawa Mozuku has higher Fucoidan content in comparison to other marine flora, as well as lower levels of impurities such as alginic acid, and is an excellent raw material for the extraction of high-purity Fucoidan.
